More Samsung devices to get Galaxy AI with latest update

  • Samsung Galaxy S23 series devices, as well as the company’s latest foldables, earbuds and tabs are set to get Galaxy AI features following an upcoming update.
  • This expands upon the devices that can use generative AI tools such as Interpreter, Note Assist and Generative Edit.
  • The expansion will happen when the One UI 6.1 update rolls out, expected on Thursday.

With the tech world leaping headlong into generative AI technology to appease customers and investors, with Galaxy AI Samsung has been at the forefront in bringing the innovation to its mobile devices, having done so much sooner than competitors like Apple.

While Galaxy AI may not be as technically impressive or as powerful as some of the larger generative AI models like OpenAI’s GPT series and Google’s Gemini AI, it still provides a somewhat useful suite of tools for users.

The company is now expanding the availability of Galaxy AI features through a new One UI 6.1 update, One UI being the company’s shell for the Android operating system. The company announced in February it would expand its Galaxy AI to more devices in March.

After the update, devices that can use AI features now include the recently launched Galaxy S24, Galaxy S23 series smartphones, the latest Galaxy foldables Flip and Fold 5, the latest Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

“Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI, but also to empower users by making AI more accessible,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung in an announcement.

“This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI,” Roh added.

In terms of the Galaxy AI features themselves, Samsung is making a point to promote the enhanced communication options in the suite.

With Chat Assist, users can adjust message tone and translate messages in 13 different languages. Meanwhile, Live Translate provides voice and text translations for phone calls in real-time, and Interpreter allows users to engage in spontaneous conversations with locals while travelling as the split-screen feature generates text translations for live conversations.

We tested the Interpreter features ourselves and found that while it does translate certain phrases well, it misses the mark somewhat when it comes to slang and nuanced local sayings.

Apart from communication enhancements, Galaxy AI also adds efficiency-increasing features using generative AI. With Cirlce to Search, users can generative search results with a swift circle-motioned gesture on any images they spot while on a browser or otherwise online.

Note Assist allow users to create formats, generate summaries and translate notes, while Browsing Assist enables individuals to stay up to speed faster by generating summaries of news articles. Finally, Transcript Assist can transcribe meeting recordings and generate summaries and translations.

“Galaxy’s latest update delivers a suite of Galaxy AI tools that encourages creative freedom even after a photo is taken,” the company says.

Like Google and others, Samsung is offering an AI image editor with Generative Edit. AI-supported devices can use the software to resize, reposition, or realign objects in any photos taken. Edit Suggestions then allows users to polish and add filters to images.

Finally Instant Slow-Mo users existing video to generate additional frames, turning a non-slow motion video into a slow-motion one.

The One UI 6.1 update with all of the generative AI features is expected to roll out worldwide on Thursday, and Galaxy AI is free of charge for owners of the above devices.
