htxt.africast – Sony, Bungie and the publisher buyouts

A new episode of the africast this week looks at the final steps of Sony buying Bungie and the recent trend of big game publishers being bought out and what this holds for the future.

Before that we need to also talk about some smaller news starting with out recent review of the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE G733C a gaming notebook that may not have the catchiest name, but has brute force to spare. It impressed us quite a bit with the only drawback being an immense price.

Next up is Lightyear which will launch on Disney+ soon and continues the trend of new Disney movies only being exclusive to South African theatres for 47 days. We’ll have to see if Thor: Love and Thunder continues this trend going into August.

Lastly its Samsung with leaks confirming the next collection of mobile devices from the company including more foldables next month, even though recent sales numbers show that these don’t sell well at compared to the rest of the Samsung portfolio.

Our main topic this week is the closing of the Sony / Bungie deal and how, going into the future, we could also see big names like EA and Ubisoft bought by other companies.

This paints a grim future of the gaming world where an even smaller number of companies controls everything well even more so than now. With no antitrust or monopoly laws stopping any of the past purchases we don’t see this trend stopping any time soon.
